Herman Van der Auweraer

About

Herman Van der Auweraer holds an MSc in Electronic Engineering and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium. After his PhD he joined in 1986 one of the earliest KU Leuven spin-offs, LMS International which built out a unique portfolio of software for mechatronic performance engineering in relation to sound and vibration. LMS was acquired by Siemens in 2013 to establish the Simulation and Testing Solutions segment of Siemens Digital Industries Software. Between 2005 and 2023, Herman was responsible for the company’s technology strategy as Director of Technology Innovation including emerging fields exploration, IPR policy, participation to collaborative research programs and coordination of cooperation with universities and strategic technology partners.

Herman was nominated Siemens Technical Fellow, driving innovation in several technology fields such as sound quality, model-based testing, the executable digital twin and the integration between machine learning and physics-based modelling. Since his retirement in 2023, he continues to support the company as advisor for strategy and innovation. In 2007, Herman was also appointed as guest professor at KU Leuven teaching advanced vibro-acoustic testing methods. He is active in several academic, regional and EU advisory councils and was recently appointed by the Flemish government as member of the Steering Committee of the Flemish Artificial Intelligence programme and as chairman of the Industrial Board of the Flemish Supercomputer Centre. Herman was awarded the doctor honoris causa from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania in 2013.

Paula Moldenaers

About

Paula Moldenaers is a full professor (em.) at the KU Leuven (Belgium). She holds an MSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering from KU Leuven. From 2003 till 2013 she was head of the Division SMaRT (Soft Matter, Rheology and Technology). The division SMaRT has evolved into one of the best equipped academic laboratories worldwide, both from a rheological as well as from a rheo-optical point of view. The research group consists of approximately 40 researchers (7 professors, postdocs and PhD students). From 2013 till 2021 Paula Moldenaers was head of the Department of Chemical Engineering of the KU Leuven, which is the largest Chemical Engineering Department in Belgium. P. Moldenaers has been/is involved in many national, international, and European projects, either as partner or as coordinator. Among others, she was the KU Leuven coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Master “EURHEO”. For many years she also coordinated all aspects of internationalization within the Department of Chemical Engineering. Since 2011, she acts as International Representative for Belgium in the board of the International Polymer Processing Society.

The research interests of P. Moldenaers focus on the rheology and morphology development in complex polymeric systems, especially two-phase polymeric blends, filled polymers and polymeric liquid crystals. More recently she also started investigating food products such as plant tissue-based suspensions and dough. The research aims at providing a rational, science-based methodology for the processing of such complex fluids. Characteristic for the research is the development and use of advanced experimental approaches which have resulted in unique experimental set-ups, data sets, characterization procedures, scaling relations and morphological insight. In 2006, Paula was elected as member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Arts and Sciences and in 2016 as Fellow of the Society of Rheology (USA)

Daniel Berger

About

Dr. Daniel Berger is a Senior Research Engineer in the Strategy and Innovation Team at Siemens Digital Industries Software. As a project manager he explores the art‐of‐possible in AI/ML, simulation and Quantum Computing.
Before his time with Siemens, he pursued an academic carrier: He studies Theoretical Physics at the University of Erlangen, received a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from TU Munich, and later worked as a post‐doc at UCLA and the Helmholtz‐Institute for Renewable Energies Erlangen‐Nürnberg.

Catalin Daniel Caleanu

About

Catalin Daniel Caleanu received the Master’s degree in Electronics of Intelligent Systems and the doctoral degree in Electronics Engineering, both from University Politehnica Timişoara. His is currently Prof. dr. habil. eng. with Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies form UPT, Timişoara, Romania where he is currently teaching Deep Neural Networks, Bioinspired Systems, Embedded System courses. He has authored more than 100 technical journal and conference papers and co-authored ten books mainly in the neural networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, computer vision and embedded systems fields. The main research directions are in deep learning applications for medical imaging, biometrics, video surveillance and automotive.

Georgiana Simion

About

Georgiana Simion received the doctoral degree in Electronics Engineering, from University Politehnica Timişoara. She is currently Associate Professor in Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies form UPT, Timişoara, Romania. She is teaching Machine Learning and Computer Vision in Applied Electronics department. Her interest research topics are in 2D and 3D hand gesture recognition, with applications in the development of smart interfaces, medical imaging and autonomous driving. Her work is recognized and validated by over 30 scientific papers (conference and journals papers) published and indexed in international databases, 3 books and more laboratory notes. She was member in 6 grants e.g. Rain Simulator – General Concept, Standards, Components Simulation, Siemens VDO Automotive, and international research contracts, and project manager of a TD type grant. During her postdoctoral grant she was in Universitat de Girona, Spain where she worked with Underwater Vision and Robotics team. She was rewarded with Premiul Ecricsson – Excelență în Telecomunicații in 2007, and Diploamă Cercetător eminent 2011 by Orizonturi Universitare.

Dacian Jurj

About

Dacian Jurj. Co-founder and COO of Renergia, a sustainability and energy efficiency app that helps individuals reduce their energy household consumption and produce their own green energy using statistical, probabilistic, and artificial intelligence algorithms. Experienced researcher with more than 10 years in the Start-Up industry. Skilled in Management, Financial Markets, Project Management, Product Development, and Physics. Strong research professional with a Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering – from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca.

Meysam Pashaei

About

Meysam Pashaei received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Iranian Center of Excellence in Power Systems, Azad University (South Tehran Branch), Tehran, Iran, in 2013, and the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Tehran, in 2019. Having gotten his M.Sc., he has worked in Taravosh Jam Co. for about two years. He is currently a Project Researcher with the School of Technology and Innovations, University of Vaasa, Finland. His research interests include power system protection and control, namely wide area monitoring and protection, smart grid applications, and earth fault management.

Mazaher Karimi

About

Mazaher Karimi is an assistant professor in electrical power engineering, in the school of technology and innovations at the University of Vaasa, Finland. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and he has continued the research on the substation automation system, and wide-area monitoring protection and control scheme of power system network, which is supplied by renewable energies and moving forward for green electrification. His current research interests are also included: smart grid applications; distributed generation; power system stability, and frequency control.

He worked as an assistant professor at Gonbad Kavous University, Gonbad Kavous, Iran, and also act as the head of the electrical engineering department. He worked as a Research Associate and Academic Visitor at the University of Manchester on the Enhanced Frequency Control Capability (EFCC) Project, awarded through Ofgem’s Network Innovation Competition. He has worked as a senior lecturer at the Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, for almost one year. He has been received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Energy and Power Systems from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2013.

Jose Enrique Ruiz Sarrió

About

Dr. Jose Enrique Ruiz Sarrió was born in Valencia, Spain in 1992. He received a double M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and in Electrical Engineering from UPV and Politecnico di Milano respectively, in 2018. He was awarded with the PhD degree from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania with the Suma Cum Laude qualification in 2022. Moreover, he was involved in the H2020 MSCA research project INTERACT which included Siemens Industry Software NV, Leuven, Belgium as an industrial partner in his PhD track, where he worked as an associate researcher. He was awarded with the Jorma Luomi Award in ICEM2022. His main research interests include high-frequency phenomena, fault diagnosis and condition monitoring in Electrical Machines and Drives.

Claudia Martis

About

Prof. Claudia Martis is the coordinator of DiTArtiS project. Her research interest is oriented towards design, modelling, optimization and testing of EMs and drives, using advanced methods, techniques and technologies. She was project manager of 7 national research projects and coordinator of 4 FP7 projects (3 of them under Marie Curie Actions) and two in the frame of Horizon 2020 (one EID). She is author/co-author of 4 books and more than 180 articles indexed in different international data base (WoS, SCOPUS, IEEE Xplore, etc).
